NMS Debate Teams Learn the Art of CX at Dilley High School

On Wednesday, October 1st, the Newman Middle School Debate Teams traveled to Dilley High School for a UIL Debate Workshop. This is only the second year that NMS has had 7th and 8th grade debate teams, and students were eager to sharpen their skills.

During the workshop, students were introduced to the ins and outs of CX (Cross Examination) Debate, one of the most competitive and challenging formats in UIL. They first watched a live debate round, paying close attention to how debaters questioned each other, built strong arguments, and defended their points under pressure.

Afterward, NMS students had the chance to develop and format their own points on a sample debate topic. Working together, they brainstormed arguments, practiced phrasing their questions, and learned how to think on their feet.

The experience gave our Cowboys and Cowgirls a deeper understanding of what it means to compete in debate—not just speaking well, but also listening closely, staying organized, and thinking critically. With this hands-on practice, the NMS Debate Teams are more prepared than ever to take on upcoming UIL competitions!
